This brief tutorial will show you how to quickly change your user ID in Ubuntu Lucid. Before going any further, you must understand one rule in Ubuntu when it comes to changing usernames. You cannot change your username while you’re logged into the system. You must login with a different account to change it.
Getting started:
After logging in with a different account, go to Applications –> Accessories –> Terminal.
Then type the commands below to change the username and the user’s real name.
sudo usermod -c "Real Name" -l New_Username Old_Username
Next, verify if the name change was a success.
Remember that the account you login with must also have the right to execute the sudo command. That means that user must be an administrator or a member of the administrator group.
